First and foremost a properly insulated home is going to pay you back several times over in heating and air-conditioning costs. The attic area is the main culprit – heat loss in the winter and uncomfortable heat gain in the summer. A study done in Toronto claimed that bringing the average attic of an R-12 level of insulation (approx 4 inches) up to R-50 would pay for itself within two years. After that its money in your pocket every single month. A properly insulated attic will also give your furnace a well deserved break, having it last longer because it won’t be running anywhere near as much as it was. The whole idea of insulating your attic is to keep the heat inside your house during the winter and to keep it outside in the summer months.
